Cat Breeds #6 (F)

The Foldex Cat

The Foldex cat, also known as the Exotic Fold, is a rare breed of cat developed in the Canadian province of Quebec. Currently, the breed is recognized by only one cat registry, the Canadian Cat Association. Foldexes are medium-sized cats with a rounded face, short legs, and folded ears. The latter are the defining feature of the breed. Their eyes are well-rounded and wide open, with pair of ears with small and smooth-edged tips. They are sweet with charming personalities, and are active and cheerful cats who enjoy being petted. They were first registered as New Breed by the Canadian Cat Association in 2006 and then finally granted the Championship status in 2010.

Cat Breeds #5 (E)

 The Exotic Shorthair

Exotic Shorthairs have a gentle and calm personality reminiscent of the Persian, but are generally livelier than their longhaired ancestors. Curious and playful, they are friendly to other cats and dogs, but they don't like being left alone and need the presence of their owner. They tend to show more affection and loyalty than most breeds and make excellent lap cats. Their calm, steady nature makes them ideal apartment cats for city dwellers. Nonetheless, Exotics retain some of the energetic spark of the American Shorthair, and they are often capable mouse hunters.

The Exotic Shorthair is a brachycephalous breed, meaning that its problems result from having the nose and eyes in close proximity to each other, giving the appearance of a pushed-in face. As well as issues with the tear ducts, sinus problems can also occur. Due to the shortened jaw, there is a chance of tooth misalignment or tooth crowding.

The Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a breed of intelligent, tall-eared, short-haired cat that emerged in England during the late 1950s. They are known for their slender bodies, wavy coat, and large ears. This breed of cat is capable of learning difficult tricks but can be hard to motivate.

Their uncommonly large, slightly rounded ears are set low on the sides of their wide heads, their eyes are large, and their noses are slightly upturned. Unlike most cats, their whiskers are very short and often curled to such an extent that it may appear as if they have no whiskers. Their body type is distinctly lightly built. Their long, sturdy legs are well suited for long leaps, and their toes are unusually large.

 The Ceylon Cat

The Ceylon originates, as its name suggests, from the island of Ceylon, which has since become part of Sri Lanka. They arrived in Europe for the first time in 1984 in Milan (Italy). They are an extremely rare breed and only a few individual Ceylon cats can currently be found in Italy and France. The breed recognised by the International Feline Federation until 1993. They are active cats, that love coconut pulp, just affirming their tropical origins!

In 1984, the Director of the Colombo Zoo authorised Veterinary Doctor Paolo Pellegatta to return to Milan (Italy) with 6 Ceylon cats. He started a breeding programme with them. However, the breed remains quite unknown and it is extremely rare to meet a Ceylon.

Ceylons are medium sized, semi-cobby cats, who interestingly have slightly shorter front legs than its hind legs. One of the main characteristics of this breed is the pronounced angle formed by their real legs. Ceylons have a thin but muscular frame. They have reasonably round heads that are small compared to their bodies, and short noses. They have big eyes, and medium to large ears with rounded tips.

Cat Breeds #2 (B)

 The Bengal Cat

The Bengal cat is a domesticated cat breed created from hybrids of domestic cats, especially the spotted Egyptian Mau, with the Asian leopard cat. The breed name comes from the leopard cat's taxonomic name.Bengals have a wild appearance; their golden shimmer comes from their leopard cat ancestry, and their coats may show spots, rosettes, arrowhead markings, or marbling. They are an energetic breed which needs much exercise and play.

Bengals take their name from the Asian leopard cat’s scientific name, Felis bengalensis. They were created through crosses between an Asian leopard cat — which in the 1950s and into the 1960s could be purchased at pet stores — and domestic shorthairs. Jean Mill, a breeder in California, was the first to make such a cross, but not because she wanted to create a new breed. She had acquired a leopard cat and allowed her to keep company with a black tom cat so she wouldn’t be lonely. To her surprise, since she hadn’t thought the two species would mate, kittens resulted, and Mill kept a spotted female. Breeding her back to her father produced a litter of spotted and solid kittens. At about the same time, Dr. Willard Centerwall was crossing Asian leopard cats with domestic cats at Loyola University. The leopard cats were resistant to the feline leukemia virus, so researchers were interested in finding out if the trait could be passed on to hybrid offspring.

 The American Whirehair

About the American Whirehair:

The American Whirehair is a cat that is usually of the colours White, Blue, Cream, Red, Platinum, Fawn, Chestnut, Chinchilla, Seal, Silver, Golden, Brown, Cameo, Bluecream and Tortoiseshell. The Wirehair is a powerful cat. She has a broad chest, a muscular neck, strong jaws and a well-developed muzzle. Her legs are thick and strong. All components of this cat should be well developed. She looks like her ancestors, which were cats meant to keep rodents out of the barn and the house. The coat of the Wirehair is similar to that of the American Shorthair, except for the crimped texture. It is thick and dense. It becomes much longer and thicker during the winter. The texture of the coat is relatively hard, as it is meant as protection for her and the crimping makes it feel even harder.

Personality of the American Whirehair:

The American Wirehair is a very pleasant cat to have as a companion. She is easy going and placid. The Wirehair is a loving cat and will attach herself to every member of her family. While the Wirehair loves to play, she actually doesn't need hourly attention. If she is in the mood to play, she'll bring a toy to her parent. The Wirehair also plays well by herself.

History of the American Whirehair:

In 1966, a kitten was found in a litter that had wiry looking fur, similar to that of a Wirehaired Terrier. The cats that produced this kitten may have been American Shorthairs, or they may have been farm cats that strongly resembled Americans.
This kitten was sold to a breeder who decided to try to replicate this spontaneous coat mutation. The kittens resulting from these matings were taken by other breeders and a carefully planned breeding program was started, dedicated to producing the American Wirehair breed.
The American Wirehair is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. This breed has a show standard, which is almost identical to that of the American Shorthair. However, every individual hair in the coat is crimped and curly. This texture creates a unique, wiry feeling to the coat.
